Lewis and Lewis Ltd has successfully passed the annual ISO inspection with no deviations raised.

The inspection was performed by auditors from Certified Quality Systems, who have audited our entire organisation, key processes, systems and management. Particular focus was made on how Lewis and Lewis Ltd secures a constant and consistent customer-oriented approach in all our activities.

Having obtained status as an ISO-certified company, we must ensure to maintain and develop our company with the customer in focus and further ensure a uniform performance towards all customers. Having defined and formalised clear objectives in this respect, we constantly measure our performance and interaction with our customers according to defined Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).

ISO facilitates a documented recognition of the challenges and problems that may arise. This enables us to react fast and initiate corrective and preventive actions to ensure continuous improvement.

Building contractors and civil engineers Andrew Scott and Alun Griffiths who worked on The Celtic Manor Resort’s Twenty Ten Clubhouse and Course – the first to be designed and built specifically to host The Ryder Cup – and project manager and cost consultants Lewis and Lewis Ltd have all secured new projects in the last few months. Both the course and clubhouse have attracted international acclaim in the run up to and aftermath of the event, culminating in a string of awards for the resort and praise for the organisations that came together to work on what was seen at the outset as an extremely ambitious project.

Part of the Rowecord Group, Andrew Scott has started 2011 with a bang, securing a series of contracts for maintenance and capital works worth a projected £6.5m. With market conditions remaining extremely competitive in the construction sector, the Port Talbot-based contractor has also successfully tendered for framework agreements with the Royal Mint in Llantrisant and BAE Systems.

Mike Grindall, Managing Director of Andrew Scott, explained that while the market remains volatile, there are opportunities for medium-sized contractors to pick up significant projects.

Grindall commented: “We are starting to see more investment from the private sector in capital works across several sectors, particularly industrial and leisure, which is creating opportunities for businesses like ours to demonstrate our ability to deliver major projects that are also costed competitively.

“Our work at The Celtic Manor, together with our past experience on projects like Parc y Scarlets in Llanelli and the Cardiff City Stadium, where Rowecord also provided the structural steelwork, has resulted in increased visibility for Andrew Scott and it is pleasing to be able to convert that awareness into new projects.”

John Coles, Business Manager at civil engineers and construction firm Alun Griffiths, said: “We were proud to have played a part in the successful 2010 Ryder Cup and the ongoing Wales Open tournaments and whenever we are tendering for projects that require us to demonstrate an ability to deliver major earthworks, especially in complex environmental conditions with archaeological and ecological constraints, we always cite our work at The Celtic Manor Resort.”

Alun Griffiths was brought in to work on the construction and formation of nine new championship golf holes for ‘The Twenty Ten’ Ryder Cup course, a new practice area and tee, three large spectator viewing plateaus and two new lakes. The first stage of the project alone involved the excavation of 600,000m³ of earth and rock which was used to build a 2000m long flood bund along the river Usk.

“We also created new water features, culverts, an access road from the existing golf clubhouse and over 3,000m of golf cart paths,” added Coles. “A lot of our work was carried out over and adjacent to the River Usk candidate Special Area of Conservation and the Lower Usk SSSI as well as working closely with Welsh heritage body CADW in regard to the numerous Roman archaeology sites that lie within the site.”

The firm that boasts the longest relationship with the resort is Newport-based consultant Lewis and Lewis Ltd, first appointed as construction manager for the build of a new £3.5m European HQ for the Sir Terry Matthews-owned Newbridge Networks adjacent to The Celtic Manor Resort site.

As The Celtic Manor Resort started to evolve, the firm was appointed project manager and cost consultant on the 90-bedroom extension to the old Manor House and later the restaurant, swimming pool and gym complex. At the time, the £95m project represented the largest single private investment in the UK and a major statement of intent from Sir Terry.

Chairman Adrian Lewis, recalling his firm’s involvement in the bid to host The 2010 Ryder Cup and the planning behind the infrastructure, said: “There was an element of crystal ball thinking at the time to anticipate what would be required in terms of infrastructure and facilities. I know that over time the estimates of visitor numbers kept increasing and the plans for the resort had to grow organically to meet the expectations of the event.”

Working closely with Russell Phillips, now Vice President of Facilities and Development at The Celtic Manor Resort, Lewis and Lewis oversaw the construction of three 18-hole golf courses, the 330-bedroom resort hotel and spa, three restaurants and the new Twenty Ten Clubhouse which hosted the European and United States Ryder Cup teams.

“There is no doubt that our work at The Celtic Manor Resort has enabled us to expand our work in the hospitality sector,” said Lewis Lewis, Director of Corporate & Client Services. “We are currently working on major hotel projects in London, Manchester and York and recently project-managed the £5m refurbishment of the St Brides Spa Hotel and Luxury Apartments in Pembrokeshire.”
